KEY SAFARI REGIONS IN UGANDA
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Uganda’s most famous safari destinations. Covering 321 km² of dense montane and lowland forest, Bwindi is best known for its population of endangered mountain gorillas. Visitors can embark on gorilla trekking adventures, a once-in-a-lifetime experience that allows you to observe these gentle giants in their natural habitat. Besides gorillas, the park is home to over 120 mammal species, including forest elephants and chimpanzees, as well as 350 bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.
The park also offers cultural encounters with the Batwa pygmies, the indigenous people of the forest, where visitors can learn about their traditional way of life.
Queen Elizabeth National Park
Queen Elizabeth National Park, located in western Uganda, is one of the country’s most popular and diverse wildlife reserves. Spanning 1,978 km², the park is renowned for its varied ecosystems, which include savannas, forests, wetlands, and lakes. The park is home to over 95 mammal species, including the famous tree-climbing lions of the Ishasha sector, large herds of elephants, and buffalo. With more than 600 bird species, it is also a birdwatcher’s haven.
Key attractions include the Kazinga Channel, where boat safaris offer close encounters with hippos, crocodiles, and water birds, as well as the Kyambura Gorge, known for chimpanzee tracking. The park’s diverse landscapes provide spectacular scenery, from the open plains of Kasenyi to the crater lakes of Katwe.
Murchison Falls National Park
Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest national park, covers an area of 3,893 km² in the northwest of the country. The park is named after the stunning Murchison Falls, where the Nile River plunges 45 meters through a narrow gorge, creating one of the most powerful waterfalls in the world. The park’s diverse habitats, ranging from savannas to riverine forests, support an incredible array of wildlife.
Visitors can enjoy game drives to spot the Big Five—lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinos—along with giraffes, hippos, and crocodiles. The park is also home to over 450 bird species, including the rare shoebill stork. Boat cruises on the Nile offer a unique perspective of the wildlife and the breathtaking falls.
Kibale National Park
Kibale National Park, often referred to as the “Primate Capital of the World,” is a must-visit for primate enthusiasts. Covering 766 km², this lush tropical rainforest is home to 13 primate species, including the largest population of chimpanzees in Uganda. Visitors can engage in chimpanzee tracking, offering a thrilling opportunity to observe these intelligent creatures up close.
In addition to primates, Kibale is home to over 375 bird species and a variety of mammals, including forest elephants and bushbucks. The park’s diverse ecosystems, ranging from wet tropical forests to savannah woodlands, provide a rich and varied landscape for exploration.
Kidepo Valley National Park
Kidepo Valley National Park, located in the remote northeastern corner of Uganda, is one of the country’s most spectacular and isolated parks. Spanning 1,442 km², Kidepo is known for its dramatic landscapes, including the rugged mountains, rolling savannas, and the seasonal Kidepo and Narus rivers.
The park is home to a wide range of wildlife, including large herds of buffalo, elephants, lions, and cheetahs. Kidepo is also one of the few places in Uganda where you can see the rare ostrich. With over 475 bird species, including the Karamoja apalis, which is endemic to the region, the park is a birdwatcher’s paradise.
Lake Mburo National Park
Lake Mburo National Park is a smaller but uniquely picturesque park located in western Uganda, covering 370 km². Known for its stunning acacia-dotted landscapes and the beautiful Lake Mburo, the park offers a different safari experience compared to the larger parks. It is the best place in Uganda to see impalas, zebras, and elands, as well as a variety of other wildlife such as hippos, crocodiles, and over 350 bird species.
Activities in the park include game drives, boat safaris on Lake Mburo, walking safaris, and horseback riding, providing a closer and more intimate encounter with the wildlife.
Semuliki National Park
Semuliki National Park, located in the Albertine Rift Valley in western Uganda, is known for its unique biodiversity and hot springs. Covering 220 km², the park features lowland tropical rainforest, which is an extension of the Congo Basin. This makes Semuliki a haven for birdwatchers, with over 440 bird species, many of which are found nowhere else in East Africa.
The park is also home to a variety of mammals, including forest elephants, chimpanzees, and pygmy hippos. The Sempaya Hot Springs, a significant cultural site for the local Bamaga people, are a must-see attraction, where visitors can witness boiling geysers and cook eggs in the hot water.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, located in southwestern Uganda, is part of the Virunga Volcanoes range, shared with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Covering just 33.7 km², it’s Uganda’s smallest national park but offers exceptional gorilla trekking with the accessible Nyakagezi gorilla family. The park also features golden monkey tracking, cultural encounters with the Batwa people, and hikes up the three dormant volcanoes—Mount Gahinga, Mount Sabyinyo, and Mount Muhabura—offering breathtaking views.
