TANZANIA

Tanzania is a premier safari destination, renowned for its iconic parks such as the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Zanzibar. Each of Tanzania’s safari parks offers a unique allure, making the country a top contender for our favourite safari experience. Among these wonders, the annual Wildebeest Migration stands out as a remarkable natural spectacle, with nearly two million wildebeest and zebras journeying across the Serengeti-Mara Ecosystem in pursuit of seasonal rains.

Tanzania, often embodying the essence of ‘quintessential Africa,’ is famed for the Serengeti’s annual wildebeest migration, the expansive Ngorongoro Crater, and the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro.

Beyond these renowned landmarks, Tanzania boasts lesser-known but wildlife-rich southern parks and reserves ideal for remote safaris. In the west, the country offers unparalleled opportunities for chimpanzee viewing, considered the best in Africa.

The turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean surrounding Tanzania’s stunning islands provide exceptional marine experiences, featuring vibrant coral reefs and abundant marine life.

Covering an area of 300km², with a diameter of 20km and a depth of 600m, it has the highest density of wildlife in Africa. Although the crater floor can get busy, staying close to the entrance gates allows for quieter exploration. The crater rim, rising over 2,200m, provides breath-taking panoramic views.

Visitors can also immerse themselves in local culture by visiting Maasai villages and delve into history at Olduvai Gorge, known as the ‘Cradle of Mankind’, where significant early human fossils were found.

The Serengeti

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania’s most renowned park, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa’s Seven Natural Wonders. Established in 1952, it is celebrated for the annual Great Migration, where over 1.5 million wildebeest and zebra traverse its plains. Spanning 14,763 km², the Serengeti boasts incredible biodiversity, with more than 500 bird species and 300 mammal species, including the iconic Big Five.

It boasts the highest density of elephants in Tanzania and is home to unique species such as gerenuks, oryx, and ostriches, along with approximately 550 bird species. The park is renowned for its high density of elephants and large prides of lions. It also boasts diverse wildlife, including rare species like the African wild dog, greater kudu, and sable antelope.

Bird enthusiasts will find Ruaha a paradise, with over 570 bird species recorded. The park’s dramatic landscapes, characterized by rocky kopjes, baobab-studded plains, and the Great Ruaha River, make it a unique and captivating safari destination.

Zanzibar

Zanzibar, an archipelago off Tanzania’s coast, is a semi-autonomous region known for its stunning islands, including the major ones, Unguja (often referred to as Zanzibar) and Pemba. The region’s capital, Zanzibar City, features the UNESCO World Heritage Site Stone Town, renowned for its rich history and Omani architectural gems such as the Sultan’s Palace and the Old Fort.

Famed as the ‘Spice Island,’ Zanzibar offers immersive spice tours that explore its diverse and aromatic plantations.

As a sought-after beach destination, Zanzibar is a perfect escape after an East African safari, with convenient light aircraft connections from various safari hotspots, leading visitors to its idyllic shores and crystal-clear waters.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Rising majestically in Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro stands as Africa’s tallest peak, towering at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). Offering various routes to the summit, Kilimanjaro attracts adventurers worldwide. Its snow-capped peak, surrounded by glaciers and alpine meadows, presents a mesmerizing sight. Climbers trek through diverse ecosystems, from lush rainforests to arid deserts, culminating in a rewarding sunrise from Uhuru Peak. Scaling Kilimanjaro is a challenging yet unforgettable experience, promising unparalleled views and a sense of accomplishment atop Africa’s roof.
